model

This is the 3 dimensional version of the bryce model i made. It is made out of cardboard and paper. I had to change up the esign a little bit. I mad the cylinder a rectangle and instead of a pyramid at the top I put a spire on it.

Lipstick Building

The Lipstick Building is located on 53rd st and 5h avenue. The architects responsible for this building are John Burgee and Philip Johnson. The building is called the lipstick because it the color and shape is identical to a lipstick. This building starts off thicker on the bottom and thins up at the top. This building takes up less street space since it isnt a quadrilateral building. It also looks different from the other buildings in the area. This building was completed in 1986. It stands at a height of 453 ft. I like the fact that a little everyday utensil turned into a building that represents it.

Bryce

The Bryce program is a program that lets you construct three dimensional figures. It lets you change the material of the sculpture, the color of the sculpture, the theme of the sculpture and the surroundings of the sculpture. My building is more of a tourist attraction, not so much as a office building. It is located between Columbia and Delancey streets in Manhattan, New York City. It will have around 60 stories. It is in the middle of co-op buildings. There are many trees and little sculptures around the building making it a little scenic. The building itself is a four sided building that that has a cone at the top. What makes the building unique is the fact that it has a spiral going around the building. The spiral will wind all the way to the tip of the building, around the 59th to the 60th floor.

Frank Gehry Pt. 4

Frank Gehry is one of those examples of people that rose from nothing to something. He is one of those people that had a dream and continued to pursue it. Frank Gehry is one of the most recognized architects in the 21st century. Works such as the Pritzker Pavilion, Guggenhiem Museum and the Fred and Ginger Buildings. Even more recognizable were the Walt Disney Hall and the Experience Music Project. He also has designed the New Jersey Nets Arena that is to be moved to Brooklyn. He was awarded the Pritzker Architectural Prize in 1989.

Frank Gehry Pt. 3

His architectural style is very unique of that of other designers. He doesn’t stick to the basic shapes of rectangles and cylinders. He has an extensive imagination. He has amazing ideas got him recognized in the architectural world. He works with concrete, steel, wood and glass. The way he uses these materials to manipulate the buildings he creates is ingenious. His Grandmother influenced him to make his “fish” sculptures from when she brought carp in and let them swim in the bathroom on Fridays. He made fish statues and a fish restaurant in Japan.

One his most unique buildings were Fred and Ginger. They are located on a corner in the Czech Republic. Fred was a cylinder and Ginger was a building made out of glass so it fills the building with constant sunlight. Fred has moving windows. Another masterpiece is the Guggenhiem Museum in Bilbao, Spain. It has a lot of curves and it is a shiny grayish color. It is a sight to see at night since the lights make it glow ever so voluminously This was the first time that Gehry ever used mostly titanium for a building before. It was completed in1997 and was a turning point in his career. The building got a lot of attention just because of the unique design, others because it attracted a lot of attention for a museum.

Frank Gehry Pt. 2

He attended The Los Angeles City College and afterward attended the University Of South Carolina. It was here that he found out that he could make a career out of being an architect. It was here that he made his first piece, a house addition.

He joined the army after his graduation. It was here that he was recognized for his talent to create furniture. He was first known as a furniture designer. But he also started to make miniature sculptures out of stuff at the army base. This also will be a breaking point in his career. When he left the army he went to Harvard University to study city planning. He only completed one year because he thought the subject didn’t go in depth enough.
His first pieces were his affordable line of furniture called “Easy Edges”. It included an assortment of stools, tables, chairs and an ottoman. He then mad a more expensive line called “Rough Edges”. Afterwards Frank and his wife a pink house in California. He decided to remodel it using an assortment of glass, fencing, and metal, concrete and wood. His house became so popular that he made it so it could be a tourist attraction. His career steadily grew bigger when he designed a studio for one of his friends. When that art studio was finished he decided to use natural resources for his own personal style. He starts getting recognized for his talent as he received more job opportunities. Every job he had he learned something new and it expanded his horizon of possibilities.

Frank Gehry started working on a new project with his friends Coosje van Bruggen and Claes Oldenburg. It was Camp Good Time, located in Santa Monica, a camp for children who had cancer. Franks job was to try to make the camp live up to its name, in other words try to make the camp building look fun so the children could have something to look up to. For example he made the roof look like boats and the kitchen looks like a big milk carton. This building was never made however, because the supervisors didn’t find it fit for young children. His biggest influence was his Grandmother.

Frank Gehry Pt. 1

Frank Owen Gehry was originally born in Toronto, Canada on February 28th 1929. He and his sister Doreen were raised in Timmons, a small town in Ontario. When he was a little kid he used to make little cities out of little wood pieces that was salvaged from his Grandfathers hardware store with his Grandmother. He started getting into buildings as he noticed his surroundings as he has worked at his Grandfathers shop for 7 years. His Grandmother was like his best friend as a child. He felt she was her earliest influence. He remembers how they used to build imaginary cities. She also let the carp swim in the bathtub on Friday nights. This led him to create pieces of fish later in his life. As a child, the other children didn’t accept his religion, Judaism and they used to call him fish. He started to study atheism to try to escape his religious difficulties. Frank went to a Hebrew school. This gave him an advantage when he later studied in Europe.

He later moved to Los Angeles, California with his parents Thelma and Irving Goldberg in the early 50s. Irving was born into a Polish family in Brooklyn, New York. He had a hard time getting money as a child, So he fought for it. This led him to be boxer and study karate. Irving later ended up also selling slot and pinball machines. When Frank was young he used to help his father with his sales. When he moved to Canada he met Thelma and they got married. His mother, Thelma, used to take him to concerts and introduced him to art. He attended the University of Southern California. He met architect Arnold Scarier here. He then got some experience as a designer in a firm.

AT&T (Sony Building)

The AT&T Building, better known as the Sony Building is located on Madison Avenue between 55th and 56th streets, in Manhattan, New York City. It is 37 stories high. It was designed by Phillip Johnson and John Burgee. It was completed in 1984. It has ornamental designs which makes the building an example of postmodern architecture. I really liked this building because when i went inside there was a big Spiderman on the wall. My first reaction was I really liked the entryway and the top of the building where it arches.

United Nations Headquarters

The United Nations is a complex located in New York City. It is made up of four buildings. Wallace K. Harrison was the architect in charge of planning. The buildings were completed in 1950. Rockefeller Jr. donated the United Nations To the city. Even though only the Secratariat Tower is mentioned first when talked about the United Nations, it isnt the only one. There is the General Assembly Hall, Dag Hammarskjöld Library and the Conference and Visitors Center. My reaction was that i didnt know that all the main building had all glass. I didnt know also that there were other buildings that made up the United Nations

The Chrysler Building

The Chrysler building is located on 405 Lexington avenue in the borough of Manhattan, New York City. It was constructed on September 19th 1928. The architect of this skryscraper went by William Van Alen. It stands at a height of 1047' including the spire at the top. It has a total of 32 elevators. A year after the chrysler building was completed the Empire State Building surpassed it in height. The one thing that amazes me about the Chrysler Building is that when you walk around 42nd street it looks like an ordinary building, but when you look at it from the top of a building you can see the distinctness of the spire. Unless i look at the top i wouldnt know if it was the Chrysler Building or not.

Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower

The Metropolitan Life Building was constructed in 1909. Napoleon Lebrun and Sons designed the 700 Ft. building Harvey Wiley Corbett was an architect on this project. It was the tallest building from 1909 to 1913 but it lost to the Woolworth Building. This Building is also located in Manhattan on madison avenue. It has 22 floors The feature that i like the most are the clocks on each face of the wall. My reaction was that it looked like a very old building next to the modern ones that sorrounded it.

Flat Iron Building

The Flat Iron Building Is located in Manhattan. Its on 175 fifth avenue. The architects were Daniel Burnham and John Wellborn Root. It was completed in 1902. I like this building because it fits right with the scenery. Its a building that fits evenly into the sidewalk, at a height of 285 ft., 22 floors. The only thing i would change about the building is the color because its boring looking and unappealing

About Me (Brandon)

Skyscraper Video

Skyscrapers are both a blessing and a curse. People build skyscrapers for symbolic reasons, such as the twin towers in malaysia. The problem with certain skyscrapers is that they can lead into catastrophes. Glass buildings are cheaper but more expensive. Bird cage buildings are good because they are thin and they hold a lot of weight. The Effiel Tower was a goood tourist attraction and also expanded the use of a human transportation elevator.
