Frank Gehry Pt. 1

Frank Owen Gehry was originally born in Toronto, Canada on February 28th 1929. He and his sister Doreen were raised in Timmons, a small town in Ontario. When he was a little kid he used to make little cities out of little wood pieces that was salvaged from his Grandfathers hardware store with his Grandmother. He started getting into buildings as he noticed his surroundings as he has worked at his Grandfathers shop for 7 years. His Grandmother was like his best friend as a child. He felt she was her earliest influence. He remembers how they used to build imaginary cities. She also let the carp swim in the bathtub on Friday nights. This led him to create pieces of fish later in his life. As a child, the other children didn’t accept his religion, Judaism and they used to call him fish. He started to study atheism to try to escape his religious difficulties. Frank went to a Hebrew school. This gave him an advantage when he later studied in Europe.

He later moved to Los Angeles, California with his parents Thelma and Irving Goldberg in the early 50s. Irving was born into a Polish family in Brooklyn, New York. He had a hard time getting money as a child, So he fought for it. This led him to be boxer and study karate. Irving later ended up also selling slot and pinball machines. When Frank was young he used to help his father with his sales. When he moved to Canada he met Thelma and they got married. His mother, Thelma, used to take him to concerts and introduced him to art. He attended the University of Southern California. He met architect Arnold Scarier here. He then got some experience as a designer in a firm.
